Well, we're here! This is Michelle. You'll probably hear a lot from me throughout the week, as I'm staying in my own room (w/ Jordyn of course), and am the only one with 24/7 internet access! I've been on 2 missions trips and have never posted a blog, so I guess this is my chance to catch up!
We arrived a little later than expected due to some local traffic, and one of our van drivers may have made a wrong turn in the Bronx (out of respect for that driver, we will leave he or she unnamed...) but we all eventually made it here safe and sound.
We began with a time of orientation w/ our leaders Harve and Robyn Bowman, and Kendy and Jose, who also work with JUMP. I've known the Bowmans since I did a 4-month internship in the Bronx in 2005. The thing that I love most about them was very evident even in the first moments of them sharing about the Bronx and this neighborhood - they absolutely love the people here, and have fully committed their lives to sharing God's love with them! Their heart for the people is contagious, and I am certain that we will grow in love and compassion just by watching their example!
After a great home-cooked meal by Robyn (she's so good we had her cater our wedding rehearsal dinner - needless to say, I don't think we'll be losing weight on this trip!), we took off for a mighty long walk to a hip-hop concert at a local church. I had no idea what to expect, but I was blown away! We saw several really talented artists who spoke the truth and love of Christ so clearly... and I was impressed at how engaging they were! We all started out like wallflowers, but after the church members gave up their seats to us and we began intermingling with them, we all started getting into it! Jordyn was waving her arms, and I think I even saw Chad pump a fist or 2! Lindsey even got pulled on stage to sing! The teens had a blast, and were encouraged and challenged in their faith, and they definitely got a cross-cultural experience!
All in all - great first day! I'm pumped to see what all God will do in and through us on this trip! I've been reminded to claim this verse: Ephesians 3:19-21 ~ "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."
